Clean water directly relates to children’s health and malnutrition. An estimated 37,000 children under 5 years old die worldwide each week due to unclean water or poor sanitary practices. Unfortunately, a mere 30% of people in India have access to high-quality drinking water and proper sanitation. Sometimes, even when clean drinking water is available, it has to be carried a great distance, typically by the children.
The orphans’ living conditions, especially their malnutrition and lack of health care, mean that they are more at risk to contract and die from water borne diseases. Even a simply remedied case of diarrhea can be fatal.
