Education is a critical factor in getting and keeping children off the streets and away from dangerous activities such as scavenging, begging and prostitution. It also has secondary benefits, such as leading to better health. People with education are more likely to ensure their children are educated, thereby helping to break the cycle of poverty.
Only 1 of every 2 people can read and write in Bihar, the lowest literacy rate of all India. Demonstrating the added challenges girls and women face, there is a drastic difference between genders in Bihar, with 60% of males but only 33% of females being literate.
Five years of schooling is required for basic literacy. Orphans can grow up without ever having set foot in a school, drastically limiting their futures. Other times, they receive life skills training but nothing to prepare them for obtaining and maintaining employment.
