Without proper nutrition the children are stunted and develop weakened immune systems. Proper nutrition is also imperative for developing cognitive, emotional and social skills. An astounding 46% of children below the age of 5 are underweight in India, directly impeding their life long vitality and often leading to premature death. Also noteworthy is that malnutrition is more prevalent in India than in Sub-Saharan Africa. In fact 40% of the
world’s undernourished children live in India.
Malnutrition is concentrated in chronically poor areas such as Bihar, where 59% of children are malnourished, making it the third worst among the states of India. Nearly 975,000 of these children are severely malnourished and close to dying. As orphans are part of the highest risk group, their rate of malnutrition is thought to be even more prevalent.
